The S&P 500 lagged the Nasdaq composite, up 0.4%. Sharp drops in gaming software, wholesale food, consumer electronics products and metal ores stocks offset nice gains by wireless telecom, computer networking, heavy construction, auto retail and other industry groups. The Dow Jones industrial average edged 0.2% higher.
